Research

The N.E.W. Program Orange County, CA in collaboration with the Obesity Research Foundation has performed or has begun numerous projects dedicated to improving the field of weight loss surgery. We have invested significant resources in maintaining one of the most complete databases of patients having had bariatric surgery. Below are some of the research projects that are currently on going.

One Thousand Laparoscopic Bariatric Operations Without A Single Mortality - Technique And Protocol.
There are very few (if any centers) that have performed one thousand weight loss surgery procedures without a single mortality.  Further more, our overall complication rate is very low. We have successfully performed laparoscopic surgery in 99.5% of patients regardless of size and previous operations. We have never had a DVT or pulmonary embolism, we have not had a single patient with sepsis in the ICU, we have never had a stoke or irreversible illness. We report on our technique and protocols in order to help other centers experience our extraordinary results.

Rapid Decrease In Liver Volume With A Very Low Calorie Diet
A short 2-week very low calorie diet acutely decreases the size of the liver.  This reduction in size can be used to greatly increase visibility and access to the gastric pouch during weight loss surgery. The mechanism of action is through the mobilization of fat in the liver. Surprisingly, fatty liver disease and hepatomegaly (enlarged liver size) has never been documented to reverse so quickly.

Zero Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Rate In Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery With The Use Of Continuous Intravenous Unfractionated Heparin Infusion.
Despite perfect technique, DVTs can cause fatal or disabling complications after any surgical procedure. Patients who are significantly overweight may not normally absorb commonly used DVT prevention medications. Also, these medications (such as Lovenox or Fragmin) can stay in the body for up to 24 hours and are not easily reversible in case of a bleeding complications The use of intravenous continuous, low-dose unfractionated heparin may be able to eliminate DVT rate and allow for rapid control of anticoagulation in the case of bleeding complications.

Remission In Type II Diabetes After Gastric Bypass Surgery.
Diabetes, a common complication of obesity that can cause devastating problems is readily reversible with weight loss surgery. Patient taking very large doses of insulin have been completely weaned off all medications just days after surgery.

Weight Loss Causes Normalization Of DHEA-S In Patient With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
Infertility, irregular periods, acne and abnormal hair growth are associated with obesity. Reversal of obesity can reverse these conditions through improvements in hormone balance.

Prevention Of Internal Hernia After Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Through The Use Of An Antecolic, Right-Flipped Roux.
A relatively common complication of laparoscopic weight loss surgery is an internal hernia. These hernias can be prevented through a simple modification in surgical techniques.

Zero Leak And Zero Stapler Malfunction Rate With Both The Ethicon And US Surgical Brand Staplers.
The most significant factor in good results after weight loss surgery is the experience of the surgeon – not the brand of stapler.

Quality Of Life After Weight Loss Surgery Equals The Non-Obese Population After Three Months.
Improvement in Male Libido after Weight Loss
For unknown reasons, improvements in male sexual function are marked after significant weight loss. More research is necessary to determine the exact mechanism.
